Auckland Transport's groundbreaking Low Emission Ferry Programme is transforming public transport on the Waitematā Harbour, with Half Moon Bay serving as the starting point for this innovative maritime project. The programme shines the spotlight on Auckland Transport’s commitment to improving ferry services and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Half Moon Bay terminal, currently under construction with practical completion expected in August 2025, is pioneering rapid charging infrastructure that positions Auckland at the forefront of global ferry electrification.
The first ferries are custom-built in New Zealand and each carry 200 passengers. These vessels feature low-drag low-wash hulls to reduce environmental impact and enhanced space allocation for e-bikes and e-scooters, reflecting modern commuter needs.
RCP's involvement began in August 2024, providing crucial contract management, project coordination, and master programming expertise. The team has been instrumental in managing the complex interfaces between contractors and stakeholders - filling gaps where needed whilst supporting Auckland Transport's delivery team. The programming service capability has ensured transparency regarding key delivery milestones whilst coordinating multiple disciplines across the programme.
The infrastructure at Half Moon Bay involves sophisticated engineering solutions designed for quick vessel turnaround times. The system comprises Vector network upgrades providing high-voltage power supply, a prefabricated charger building manufactured in New Plymouth, power conversion equipment from ABB, and extensive high-voltage ducting and cabling systems. The charging station enables ferries to top up their batteries within 10-15 minute windows during passenger loading and unloading.
The programme has achieved remarkable coordination between three key contractors providing the civil works, the network infrastructure, and the charging technology. Through what has been described as "military precision" in planning and sequencing, the team has maintained continuous ferry operations throughout construction.
Looking ahead, the infrastructure upgrade works at the Downtown Ferry Terminal represents the next phase in Auckland’s charging network. This facility will feature three further ferry charging berths to enable further routes on the ferry network to be electrified. The Downtown site presents additional complexities, requiring cable installation beneath historic concrete wharves in a city centre waterfront environment.
This innovative programme demonstrates Auckland Transport's commitment to sustainable public transport innovation. The successful completion of Half Moon Bay positions Auckland as a leader in maritime electrification, paving the way for cleaner, quieter harbour transport that will benefit communities across the region for decades to come.
