Getting Things Done, Tangible Impact
Jo Lee’s path to project management was anything but conventional. Originally trained as a nurse, she worked across the UK, Israel, and Africa before returning to New Zealand 21 years ago. “Nursing pay was poor, and with my registration expired, I decided to change course.” That decision led her to a role as a PA for RCP’s small team at Auckland City Hospital, where she quickly found a natural synergy between her healthcare background and her family’s roots in construction.
It wasn’t long before Jo was drawing up diagrams and plans alongside her manager, bridging the gap between clinical care and construction. “When I started, there were only about ten of us. I remember the team cutting up desks just to make more workspace in the office.”
As RCP grew, so did Jo’s expertise. Her early experience in hospital refurbishments and large-scale healthcare projects laid the foundation for a career built on continuous learning and problem-solving. "I taught myself to understand the various consultant disciplines and interpret information so I could explain it in layman’s terms to clients. This process helped me develop a deep understanding of projects from the ground up."
Now, after two decades with RCP, Jo has played a key role in some of New Zealand’s most transformative projects—from Counties Manukau District Health Board to Auckland’s Commercial Bay development. Four years ago, she relocated to New Plymouth, where she has since worked on the Southern Cross Hospital, Western Institute of Technology, and the highly significant Parihaka Infrastructure Project.
Pragmatic and action-oriented, Jo thrives on tackling challenges head-on. “I believe in getting things done. You can’t avoid something just because it’s difficult.” She also values strong relationships, recognising their lasting impact on project success. “Building trust between all parties is crucial—you need open, honest communication while respecting each other’s perspectives.”
Outside of work, Jo leads an active life. Recently married and a proud owner of two energetic dogs, she enjoys cycling through New Plymouth’s landscapes, exploring mountain trails and creating delicious meals. Adaptable and always up for a challenge, she remains open to wherever the next project takes her—driven by a passion for making a tangible impact in her community.
