Interrogating Project Design for Project Success

Bringing over 35 years of international and local expertise in architecture, construction, and project management, Jason Ward excels at identifying emerging discrepancies, ensuring high-quality design, reducing costly redesigns, and improving site efficiency. His specialised approach to design assessment adds significant value to large-scale projects, enhancing the accuracy and completeness of design documentation, and mitigating construction risks for on-site workers. As Senior Project Manager and Design Assessor for RCP, Jason confidently helps lead some of New Zealand's most significant construction projects.

Jason’s international experience showcases his detail-oriented, no-nonsense approach, and includes Deputy Project Director for a $1.5 billion pharmaceutical R&D facility in Shanghai, Lead Project Architect for a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance lab in the UK, and Senior Architect for over one hundred 5-Star Villas at Sanctuary Falls in Dubai.

In New Zealand, he has also participated in several large-scale public and private projects across multiple sectors including new schools for the Ministry of Education, Auckland Airport, and the Moa Point Sludge Minimisation Facility. His work has helped ensure design quality, increased coordination, alignment with client goals, efficient project delivery, and integrating sustainability and Safety in Design principles.

“I’ve been in project management, construction management, the whole life cycle, on both sides of the table - the designer and the contractor - so I know where I can add the best value. For example, the time and cost of inaccurate information is immense. Nullifying that for the guys on site is essential, thus reducing conflicts between the consultant and contractor.”

Jason’s skills in interrogating project design are key in helping maximise cost and time efficiency. A great example of Jason’s work was a major logistics facility where he unearthed over 200 design discrepancies and proposed 30 value-engineering opportunities

“Everyone has a home to go back to - but everyone should at least go home with a smile on their face. That starts with the design up front. I’ve spent time on site - I’ve gone through that pain to truly understand the design requirements and implications that play out through construction.”

Efficient delivery of a project on time and under budget is paramount to his approach and Jason’s attention to the quality of the design, the people behind the construction, and a well-coordinated holistic perspective is what help him deliver results for clients.

“The substantial investments our clients make in large consulting teams should pay off. They're rightly expecting design documentation that is fully coordinated and build-ready. They understand it's in their interests for their builders to be set up to succeed.”

"Ninety percent of the success of a project is achieved before the shovel hits the ground.”
