Future Accommodation Strategy

For years the parliamentary precinct has needed more office space than it has, a gap filled by leasing buildings around it. Parliament's Future Accommodation Strategy, revived in 2015, is ending that reliance and bringing more than 600 staff into sufficient, secure accommodation close to the debating chamber. It is as much about how Parliament works as where it sits, consolidating functions, improving public access and opening the Western Precinct from a vehicle-dominated area into a pedestrian-friendly space. At its centre is the Museum Street Building, a six-storey IL4 structure built on low-damage principles with base isolators and dampers, using mass timber and low-carbon design to target a 6 Green Star rating. The two-storey Ballantrae Place Building centralises deliveries and site access to keep the precinct safe and clear.

RCP is managing construction of the Museum Street, Ballantrae Place and Service Buildings through to completion, coordinating contractor, architects, engineers and cultural advisor across a live government precinct where security and continuity cannot slip. Close collaboration with Mana Whenua carries local heritage through what gets built. The work reshapes the daily environment for parliamentary staff while making the seat of government a more open and accessible place for the public.
