Queenstown Town Centre Streetscapes Upgrade

Central Queenstown's streets were due for a rethink. As part of its town centre masterplan, Queenstown Lakes District Council wanted to revitalise a run of streets into inviting, inclusive public spaces, a better pedestrian connection running from the Queenstown Gardens up to the Gondola, with local cultural storytelling woven through.

The upgrade went above and below ground at once, new road surfaces and paving to the district's public-realm guidelines, and renewed drainage and utilities beneath them, all planned around a working town centre and private developments building at the same time.

RCP managed the developed and detailed design for the Council and gave the strategic procurement advice that readied the project for construction, engaging the CBD's property and business owners from the start. RCP built the construction strategy and programme, managed the budget and prepared the procurement documents, coordinating closely with the Council's engineering and planning teams and the private developers working nearby.

RCP's pre-construction advice also helped the Council secure shovel-ready government funding, getting the upgrades under way. Completed in early 2023, the reworked streets, Brecon, Rees, Beach, Park and Hotops Rise, gave central Queenstown a set of higher-quality public spaces and a continuous walking route through the heart of town.
