In February 2023 Cyclone Gabrielle struck Hawke's Bay and flooded Eastern Institute of Technology's Taradale campus, pushing floodwater and contaminated silt through its ground-floor buildings. About 90 percent of them were inundated and more than 500 teaching and support spaces were affected. Teaching moved to temporary sites across Napier and Hastings, up to 45 of them at one point, so students could keep learning while the campus was unusable.

EIT brought RCP in within weeks to lead the recovery. The first job was to make the campus safe and get students back, working through the insurance process and the emergency clean-up so damaged buildings could be stabilised, and about 30 percent of the campus reopened for the start of Semester Two in July 2023.

From there the work became a staged rebuild, carried out block by block around a campus that was teaching again. RCP sequenced it so the spaces hardest to replace, nursing, veterinary nursing, engineering and viticulture, came back first, keeping disruption to students and staff as low as possible while construction went on around them.

The recovery has grown from straight reinstatement into something more, lifting the campus to modern standards and weaving Māori and Pacific design and kaumātua-led input through the work. One of the clearest results is Te Kahikatea, a nursing clinical simulation suite created in the seismically upgraded Bruce Martin building, giving Hawke's Bay's future nurses realistic ward and clinic training and bringing the School of Nursing back together on campus.
